The School of Materials and Chemistry Engineering (SMCE) was established in 2006. It originated from the Building Materials Office which was founded in 1958, and renamed itself the Department of Material Science and Engineering in 2001. At present, the SMCE embraces 5 departments and 4 research centers, which are Department of Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials Engineering, Department of Polymer Materials and Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Metal Materials Engineering, Chemical Experiment Center, Materials Science and Engineering Experiment Center, Anhui Province Key Laboratory for Advanced Building Materials, and Modern Analysis and Testing Center.
Presently the SMCE has five undergraduate majors, including Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Metal Materials Engineering. Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials Engineering is the National and Province-level Characteristic Specialty. It got qualified of the China Engineering Education Accreditation in 2016. Polymer Materials and Engineering and Applied Chemistry are the Province-level Characteristic Specialties. Chemical Engineering is evaluated as the Outstanding Engineer Construction Specialty of Anhui Province. SMCE offers two academic master degree programs of first-level discipline in Materials Science and Engineering and Chemistry, and a professional master degree program in Construction and Civil Engineering (Material Engineering) . Materials Science and Chemistry are listed in the key disciplines of Anhui Province. Materials Science and Engineering is the construction discipline of doctoral authorization in Anhui Province.
Currently SMCE has 90 full-time teachers, including 21 Professors, 23 Associate Professors and 58 teachers with doctoral degree. The faculty members have been awarded some honors in recent years, including one national teaching team, two provincial teaching team, three “outstanding teacher of Anhui Province”, one “top talents of disciplines in Anhui universities”, two “academic and technological leaders of Anhui Province”.
SMCE has good conditions for experiment, teaching and scientific research，including Provincial Demonstration Center for Chemistry Experiment and Teaching, Provincial Demonstration Center of Experiment and Teaching for Materials Science and Engineering , Key Laboratory for Advanced Building Materials in Anhui Province, Anhui Province Key Laboratory for Advanced Building Materials and Engineering, Anhui Province International Joint Research Center for Advanced Building Materials, and Anhui Jianzhu University Key Laboratory for Functional Molecule Design and Interface Process. The total value of equipment assets exceeds 70 million yuan.
Adhering to the philosophy of enhancing the SMCE through scientific research , SMCE implements applied basic research and social services in the fields of advanced inorganic building materials, advanced organic building materials, advanced environmental and energy functional materials. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 100 scientific research projects, including National Key Research Plan, National Support Plan for Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Anhui Province Science and Technology Research Plan, Anhui Province Natural Science Foundation, and other university-enterprise collaboration programs. The total amount of research funding is more than 30 million yuan. The SMCE has won 2 second prizes for National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 first prize, 3 second prizes and 6 third prizes for Anhui Province Science and Technology Progress Award. In the past five years, the faculty members have obtained 24 authorized invention patents and published more than 600 academic papers , of which more than 220 were published in journals indexed by SCI, EI, and ISTP system.
According to the requirements of discipline development and social economy for talents’ quality , SMCE pays great attention to the education of scientific process quality and engineering practice ability. It insists on giving priority to discipline construction, promoting professional construction and development, as well as creating an atmosphere of rigorous academic attitude, unity of knowledge and action, and constant self-improvement. It continues to make progress in talent training, scientific research, social services, and international exchanges. In 2009, SMCE won the honorary title of “National Advanced Group of Education System”.
